HAMBURG ERSATZ
Welcome to HAMBURG ERSATZ! Whereas HAMBURG is a placeholder for "city", ERSATZ indicates a motif taking the place of an action or a satisfaction which cannot be realized directly: utopian models of social existence. Dataspace turns out as the ideal site to house the anticipating consciousness, for utopia requires an uninhabited or uninhabitable place, but at the same time it needs people and material for its development. Utopian models are provoked by the dissatisfaction with the prevailing state of affairs. In anticipation of change, they are not content with the realm of the imaginary, but want the better life. The architectonic drafts that crystallize these phantasies look for paradise on earth before it has arrived in form of a new social order.
